The Africa Climate Summit (ACS) 2023, held Sept. 4-6 in Nairobi, Kenya, was an incubator for world leaders and policymakers. They came together to discuss vital issues such as climate adaptation, renewable energy and financing for climate-friendly projects on the African continent. Behind the scenes, production and organization also played a crucial role. PINO and The Productioneers provided a number of High-level side events.
Arrival in Nairobi
It all started with the team's arrival in Nairobi. Pieter Schure of PINO, along with Noah Pappot and Mees Verburg, traveled to Kenya to lend their expertise to the organization and show direction of high-level side events. This was all commissioned by the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA). The Productioneers took care of event management and acted as technical liaison, linking the client with the local technical suppliers.
Highlights of the event
One of the highlights was the High-level intergenerational dialogue, organized by GCA in collaboration with the Wangari Maathai Foundation. Here, as many as 1,250 young people met with international leaders, including prominent figures such as Ban Ki Moon and Akinwumi Adesina, as well as more than 10 ministers from different countries. For this event, PINO and The Productioneers provided coordination, logistics, show direction and technical support.
The second day of the summit featured the Presidential Day Program. In it, Kenyan President, William Ruto, announced that Kenya will host GCA's biobased office in Nairobi. The Leaders Dialogue that followed highlighted the importance of investing in climate adaptation to reduce climate impacts in Africa.
Challenges
Organizing such a large event abroad naturally has its challenges. Cultural differences, local regulations and logistical challenges are just some of the obstacles organizers face. However, with the expertise of the team, who have experience producing in Africa, the event was executed smoothly and successfully.
